Cruise ships are designed to float, not to tip over. Several factors contribute to a cruise ship's stability, including its size, shape, and weight distribution. Cruise ships also have a number of safety features in place to prevent them from tipping over, such as watertight compartments and ballast tanks.
Despite these safety features, there have been a few cases of cruise ships tipping over. In 1985, the MS Prinsendam tipped over and sank off the coast of Alaska. In 2007, the MS Sea Diamond tipped over and sank off the coast of Greece. And in 2012, the Costa Concordia tipped over and sank off the coast of Italy.
